Listening to the Qur'an

Many people nowadays listen to the Qur’an – whether in the car or whilst busy in the kitchen (especially during Ramadan) without observing the correct etiquettes. Yes, it is the best thing that you can listen to, and the most rewarding, as it is the true word of Allah (swt), but we should also be careful not to be disrespectful while we are doing so.

There are several ayaat in the Qur’an which refer to how we should behave when listening to the recitation of Allah’s book;

1.     So, when the Qur'an is recited, listen to it, and be silent that you may receive mercy. (7:204)

This is a command that one listens to the Qur'an when it is being recited, in respect and honour of it. If we want to receive Allah’s mercy, then when the Qur’an is being read, we should listen to it with attention. This means no talking or social chit-chat, only full concentration. Otherwise, it becomes just like background music.

2.     And those who disbelieve say: "Listen not to this Qur'an, and make noise in the midst of its (recitation) that you may overcome." (41:26)

This ayah mentions how the Qur’aish used to advise one another not to pay heed to the Qur'an or obey its commands. It was common practice for the disbelievers to talk and to whistle whilst the Qur’an was being recited so as to not pay attention to it and also to distract others from doing so. If we talk, or allow others to talk during the recitation of the Qur’an, we are no different to these Qur’aish in this respect, and we should not wish to be like them in any matter.

3.     And (remember) when We sent towards you (Muhammad) a group of the jinn, (quietly) listening to the Qur'an. When they stood in the presence thereof, they said: "Listen in silence!" And when it was finished, they returned to their people, as warners. (46:29)

Here, Allah (swt) teaches us the etiquette of listening to the Qur’an in silence by using the example of when the Jinns came to the Prophet (saw) to hear the recitation.

We can understand from just 3 ayaat what our manners should be when listening to the Qur’an being recited. It is not a matter of choice, but a command from our creator. May Allah (swt) help us to understand the language of the Qur’an, to pay full attention to it and to act upon it. Ameen.

The objective of ‘Muslim Poverty Relief’ is two-fold: to provide relief from poverty and hardship and at the same time to advance the better understanding of Islam. It is in furtherance of the second part of this objective that the above guidance is written.
